Drama by Early Modern Women: Text into Performance
Organizers:
Description:
This interactive, exploratory interdisciplinary workshop will require participants
to prepare three comparative extracts from plays by English early modern women
dramatists, including Margaret Cavendish, together with related contemporary
material about dramatic production. Plays selected will span the period and
most likely include a pre-Restoration text and material by Aphra Behn. The
workshop’s emphasis will be on production and performance, with a pedagogical
bias towards enabling students to explore the layers of signification presented
by the texts. Ten minutes of introduction, supplemented by twenty minutes
of open discussion will be followed by video viewing of one interpretation
of the scenes selection, performed by our own students (fifteen minutes).
25 minutes further discussion of production and strategies will conclude the
workshop.
