What professional development or graduate credit can I earn for participating in the institute?
Teachers who complete the institute (including two day-long follow-up sessions during the school year) will receive either:

  • 3 MSDE professional development credits

 OR

  • 3 graduate credits from the University of Maryland (upon completion of additional requirements)
    • Please note: teachers--or their schools--must pay tuition and fees of approximately $1,600. They will also be expected to fulfill additional requirements.

When and where is the institute taking place?
The institute will take place at the University of Maryland campus in College Park, Maryland.  Teachers will spend two days in downtown Washington, DC, to visit museums and library collections. The institute will run from Monday, June 22, through Friday, June 26, 2009.  On the following Monday, June 29, teachers will return to campus for lesson presentations and the graduation ceremony.

What are the residency requirements?
The 2009 institute has no residency requirement.  Teachers return to their homes at the end of each day.  Applicants who are interested in residing close to campus during the institute may call or email the Center for Renaissance & Baroque Studies to learn about affordable accommodations in the College Park area.

How do I know if I am eligible to participate, and how much does it cost to participate?
The program offerings, including all lectures, workshops, and museum visits, are free to all Maryland school teachers.
Teachers are responsible for bringing or buying lunch each day except for the final luncheon of the institute on Monday, June 29.
There is a non-refundable $75 application fee.
Graduate credit: Teachers--or their schools--must pay summer school tuition and fees of approximately $1,600. They will also be expected to fulfill additional requirements.

What is the content of this year's program?
Some of the exciting activities planned for this year include:

  • Lectures on cartography as cultural artifact; early American art history; representations of La Malinche; religious diversity, the Jesuits, and Bartolomé de Las Casas.
  • Hands-on Workshops:  Caribbean music and movement; Latin American art; dramatizing the conquest.
  • Field trips to Washington, D.C. to view exhibitions and collections at the Library of Congress, Dumbarton Oaks Research Library and Collection, and the Textile Museum.
