Topic: Influence of the arts of Ancient Greece

Big idea: Family

Essential Understanding:

  • Most cultures have a formal definition for "family"
  • Most cultures have a specific roles for each member of the family
  • The roles a person plays in a family may help to establish that person’s role in his/her community
  • The roles of family members are often explained or modeled through the arts and stories produced by that culture

Essential Questions:

  • What is the identity of a "family"?
  • What are the roles for the different members of the family?
  • What are the differences between the roles of the adults in the family? The children?
  • How does the identification of the family as a unit and by individual members affect the arts and stories of a culture?

Art Domain: Domain III - Creative Expression and Production

Art Indicators: The students will demonstrate the ability to organize knowledge and ideas for expression in the production of art.

Art Lesson

Objective:

Student will understand the influence of Greek myths and how the myths relate to art and aesthetic of the family.

Warm Up:

Students will discuss the question, What does "family" mean to you?

Materials:

  • Pencils
  • Color pencils
  • Sketchbook
  • Sketch paper
  • Myths

Vocabulary:

  • Family
  • Mythology
  • Metaphor
  • Prosperity
  • Self Actualization

Introduction Activity:

Student will be divided into small groups and each group will read a chosen myth for interpretation and discussion purposes.

Independent Activity:

Students will illustrate a portion of the myth, which gave soulful inspiration.

Assessment:

The groups will present their illustrations and share their thoughts about the myth read and illustrated.

Closure:

Students will discuss the their understanding of the myths and the importance of the illustrations.
