"Other Voice" Prize for an Outstanding Paper by an Undergraduate

The purpose of this award is to both encourage and reward excellence in undergraduate study of and research on any aspect of early modern women's studies. Undergraduates at any institution in the United States or abroad are invited to submit papers.

Who may enter: Any student enrolled as an undergraduate during 2007-08 may submit a paper. Students who were graduated in December 2007 are eligible, provided the work submitted was completed while the student was still an undergraduate. Submitted papers need not be by seniors.

Work to be submitted: The paper, which should be no longer than 15 pp., double-spaced in a standard 12-point font, may be on any aspect of early modern women's studies. Students may submit a portion of a longer work such as a thesis, provided the section submitted presents a coherent argument as a free-standing section. All papers must be typed, using standard academic format in accordance with the student's particular discipline (MLA, etc.), including references and bibliography. The bibliography is not included in the 15-page limit. Each paper should include a cover sheet providing the student's name and year in school, major, and institution, as well as the course for which and name of the instructor for whom it was written. In addition, the instructor should submit a brief statement to the prize committee, confirming that the paper was written under the instructor's direction. This letter, which may be emailed directly to Naomi Yavneh, past president of EMW, at the address below, is NOT intended to be a letter of recommendation, and will not be shared with the committee members, except to note its existence.

Judging: The papers will be judged by a committee of no fewer than two members, appointed by the executive board of EMW. Papers will be judged on originality, coherence of argument, academic rigor and contribution to the field; the judges' comments will be shared with the student and his/her instructor.

Awards: The author of the first prize paper will receive his/her choice of one book published by the University of Chicago Press as part of its "Other Voice in the Early Modern World" series, contributed by the publisher, and a year's membership in EMW. The winner will also receive a $200 travel grant toward travel to the 2008 EMW Annual meeting. Two honorable mentions will also receive a year's membership in EMW. The instructors of all three award winners will receive a year's membership in EMW.

Deadline: Papers should be submitted to Naomi Yavneh, EMW past president, by May 10, 2008. They may be submitted electronically to yavneh(at)honors.usf.edu (preferred; please put "EMW paper" in the subject line) or, in triplicate, to Naomi Yavneh, Director, Undergraduate Research Honors College, University of South Florida 4202 East Fowler Avenue, SVC 1088 Tampa, FL 33620-7974

Prize winners will be announced at the EMW Annual Meeting to be held at the Sixteenth Century Studies Conference.
