As
part of their "Schools for the New Millennium" program,
the National Endowment for the Humanities
has sponsored this partnership between the University of Maryland
at College Parks Center
for Renaissance and Baroque Studies and Northwestern
High School in Hyattsville, Maryland. "In Pursuit of the American Dream" is a school reform project that offers teachers intensive preparation in three content areas -- Native American, Immigrant, and African American cultures -- and, at the same time, opportunities to learn new ways of integrating technology into classroom materials and instruction. Through summer institutes, after-school "cyber cafes," and cross-disciplinary collaboration, teachers have expanded their academic and literary repertoire, learned and refined technology skills, and developed opportunities for their students to do the same in creative ways.
