What professional development or graduate credit can I earn for participating in the institute?
Teachers who complete the institute (including two day-long follow-up sessions during the school year) will receive either:

  • 5 MSDE professional development credits

 OR

  • 3 graduate credits from the University of Maryland (upon completion of additional requirements)
    • Please note: teachers--or their schools--must pay tuition and fees, approximately $1,600. They will also be expected to fulfill additional requirements.

When and where is the institute taking place?
The institute will take place at The Inn & Conference Center, University Maryland, University College, in College Park, Maryland. It will run from Monday, June 23 through Tuesday, July 1, 2008.

What are the residency requirements?
Teachers are required to stay at The Inn & Conference Center from June 23 through 26, 2008. 
(Note: Double occupancy.  Additional fees for single occupancy.)
Teachers may, if they choose, secure housing at The Inn & Conference Center from
June 27 through June 30, 2008, at no additional cost.

NOTE: There are NO EXCEPTIONS to this policy.
We are constrained by the requirements of our grant.

 

How do I know if I am eligible to participate, and how much does it cost to participate?
The institute is free to all Maryland public school teachers. 
There is a $50 application fee, non-refundable.
Graduate credit: Teachers--or their schools--must pay summer school tuition and fees, approximately $1,600. They will also be expected to fulfill additional requirements.
 

What is the content of this year's program?
Some of the exciting activities planned for this year include:

  • Lectures on court history, expansion, and power in the Mughal Empire; Persian and Indian fine arts; literature; Islam and Hinduism; Indian music.
  • Workshops:  Kathak dance; music; Indian painting.
  • Field trip to the Freer Gallery of Art and Arthur M. Sackler Gallery in Washington, D.C.
  • Workshops about using technology in the classroom; evaluation and assessment; outreach and support.
