What professional development or graduate credit can I earn for participating in the institute?
Teachers who complete the institute (including two day-long follow-up sessions during the school year) will receive either:

  • 4 MSDE professional development credits
    • Please note: Tuition cost for 4 MSDE Credits *NOW ELIMINATED*

 OR

  • 3 graduate credits from the University of Maryland (upon completion of additional requirements)
    • Please note: teachers--or their schools--must pay tuition and fees of approximately $1,600. They will also be expected to fulfill additional requirements.

When and where is the institute taking place?

The institute will take place at the University of Maryland campus in College Park, Maryland.  Teachers will spend two days in downtown Washington, DC, to visit the Freer Gallery of Art and Arthur M. Sackler Gallery. The institute will run from Thursday, July 8, through Wednesday, July 14, 2010.  Although there are no scheduled activities on Sunday, July 11, many teachers use this time to develop their lesson plans individually or in teams.

What are the residency requirements?

The 2010 institute has no residency requirement.  Participants may choose the option of residing at a hotel near campus for the final two nights of programming, from Monday, July 12 through Wednesday, July 14, at an additional cost of $60 per night.  Teachers who are interested in this residency option should indicate their preference on their applications.

What are the program requirements for earning professional development credit?

Teachers must meet the following requirements in order to earn 4 MSDE Continuing Professional Development credits by May 15, 2011:

1. Attendance and participation in all program activities, including lectures, workshops, field trips, scheduled teamwork time, and follow-up sessions in the fall and spring.

2. Submission of an individual lesson plan based on the content from the summer institute.  During the summer, each teacher is responsible for drafting an arts-integrated lesson plan and for presenting this lesson on the final morning, Wednesday, July 14, 2010. Teachers must revise their lessons during the 2010-11 school year, and submit the final lesson online by May 15, 2011.  Each lesson plan will be uploaded to the web archive, along with samples of student work.

How do I know if I am eligible to participate, and how much does it cost to participate?

All area teachers are eligible to participate in the institute.  The program offerings, including all lectures, workshops, museum visits, and some meals, are included in the tuition cost.

All applicants must pay a non-refundable $100 application fee.

For MSDE Continuing Professional Development credits: NO TUITION COST!!

For Graduate credit: Teachers--or their schools--must pay summer school tuition and fees of approximately $1,600. They will also be expected to fulfill additional requirements.

What is the content of this year's program?

Some of the exciting activities planned for this year include:

  • Lectures on Buddhism in Tibet and beyond, Tibetan folk music, and the art of palaces from Lhasa to Beijing.
  • Hands-on arts workshops on mandalas, yoga, and Asian dance traditions.
